Our goal is to ensure that every step of the surgery process, from scheduling to post-operative care is as smooth and pain-free as possible. Here is what you can expect:

Pre-operative process:

1. A physician will describe your disease and the surgery that he recommends. All of your questions and those of your family will be answered.
2. Our surgery coordinator will obtain some basic information from you and will coordinate with your general medical doctors to ensure that you are healthy and cleared for surgery
3. Our surgery coordinator will contact you by phone to confirm the location, date and time of your surgery. You may be given some special instructions prior to surgery depending on your eye condition.

Note: You should not eat or drink anything following midnight on the day of your surgery. You will be given instructions as to which of your regular medications you should and should not take the day of your surgery.

The day of surgery:

• Upon arrival at the surgery center or hospital you will be taken to a pre-operative area where your surgical eye will be dilated and nurses, anesthesiologists and your surgeon will ensure that everything is prepared for your surgery.
• Most retina surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will be able to go home the same day as the surgery.
• Most retina surgeries are performed under “twilight” anesthesia. This means that you will be given medication by an anesthesiologist to sedate and relax you during the surgery. Your physician will then anesthetize the area around your eye to ensure that you do not have any pain during the surgery. Some retina surgeries require general anesthesia, where you will be completely asleep during the surgery.
• Following the surgery, your eye will be patched and shielded to protect it. You may be given some special instructions by your doctor to keep your head in a particular position after the surgery (such as face down or upright).
• For outpatient surgeries, you will be able to go home the same day as surgery. You will return the next day in clinic to check the eye. Following surgery, we ask that you avoid strenuous activities or any activities that may harm the eye.

Following surgery:

• On the day after your surgery, you will be seen in clinic where the eye patch and shield will be removed and the eye examined.
• You will be given a prescription for the eye drops your surgeon wants you to take. Note: all glaucoma drops that you are taking regularly should be continued after the surgery unless otherwise instructed by your surgeon.
• You will be given a follow-up appointment and our contact information should you have any questions or concerns post-operatively.
